This was the first chase of the year for me. The setup was typical of
early spring, but looked pretty good. Discrete supercells were likely
eary before things would evolve into a fast moving MCS. A Moderate
Risk was issued. I woke up about 10:00am, and a strong squall line had
already formed in West Texas. SPC upgraded to a High Risk.
Target: Waurika, OK

We left Norman and headed towards SW on I-44. There was a potentially
tornadic storms producing damage near Seymour, TX, and it was moving
NE. We decided to change our target to Lawton in an attempt to
intercept the storm. It would be quite tricky with the line moving at
about 70mph.
The line was beginning to bow out and form a
comma-head/meso-low enhancing the rotating areas. We were unable to
get to Lawton in time, so we existed I-44 at Elgin and headed east to
Sterling. We were afraid the comma-head would cause any possible
tornado to be rain-wrapped making it impossible to see and a very
dangerous area to drive towards. We parked about one miles south of
Sterling. Eventually, we picked up and moved E towards Rush Springs
trying to stay ahead of the storm.
About the time we reached Rush Springs, we were
hit by a very heavy precip core. No hail, but very heavy rain. We
turned north on US-81 to Chickasha, and then NE on I-44 towards
Oklahoma. We turned east on I-40 and followed the storm as far east as
Shawnee before calling off the chase.
6:30pm
We ate at Chili's in Shawnee, then returned to Norman
SUMMARY:
|
The storms were not very impressive once we reached them, but it was
still a good first chase of the year. I think the storms did produce
some damage in Lawton. I had an opporuntity to try out my new GPS
unit, and it worked pretty well. The storms were quite a bit more
severe furth south into Texas producing a few tornadoes.
